Rarely Decaf is a technology consulting firm that helps service businesses replace outdated, legacy software with modern, custom web applications.
We leverage a combination of visual development platforms, traditional coding practices, and emerging AI tools to deliver scalable, enterprise-grade solutions.
Here’s a case study of the kind of work we do.
We’re seeking a mid-level Full-Stack Developer with a strong systems-thinking mindset,
ready to take charge of technical decisions and architecture at Rarely Decaf. Today, the founder has been the primary solutions architect—handling data modeling, system design, and platform decisions. We want you to gradually step into that architect role, shaping the foundation of our projects and mentoring the rest of the team as we grow. If you’re excited to bridge day-to-day coding with high-level system architecture and eventually lead the technical direction at Rarely Decaf, we’d love to chat.
What you’ll do
- Design and implement full-stack architectures: You’ll own database schemas, caching strategies, and RESTful APIs on our Xano backends, while building robust front-ends in WeWeb (Vue.js under the hood). Your focus will be on performance, scalability, and secure data flows—not just infrastructure minutiae.
- Serve as a “system architect in training: Work closely with our founder—who currently leads technical architecture—to gradually take over high-level decision-making. You’ll learn how we structure multi-tenant apps, integrate external microservices, and handle large-scale data, preparing you to guide future projects.
- Mentor and guide our visual-first dev team: Become an expert in the under-the-hood features of Xano and WeWeb—custom modules, JS Lambdas, microservices, and more. You’ll share best practices, lead code reviews, and ensure our solutions follow sound engineering principles.
- Contribute to business-focused solutions: Collaborate with the product manager, designer, and founder to translate requirements into maintainable architectures. You’ll balance trade-offs in complexity, cost, and speed, ensuring we deliver tangible value that aligns with clients’ core needs.
- Document and communicate technical decisions: Maintain clear diagrams, logic flows, and written guidelines that explain why you chose certain approaches. By articulating decisions effectively, you’ll keep everyone in sync and establish reusable patterns for future projects.
- Grow into a technical leadership role: As you gain expertise in system-level problem-solving, you’ll have the opportunity to shape Rarely Decaf’s technical roadmap—experimenting with AI tools, exploring advanced frameworks, and eventually stepping into a CTO-like role on key client engagements.
Our tech stack
We combine visual development (using platforms-as-a-service) with traditional software engineering. Think system architecture, not just code—we care about robust design, performance, and security, without the overhead of raw infrastructure provisioning.
- Xano: Our backend development platform. It merges a “no-code” interface with enterprise infrastructure (Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Docker). Think of it like Heroku for visually programming RESTful APIs and data logic—you can build sophisticated business rules visually, then drop down to custom JavaScript as needed. It uses PostgreSQL under the hood and handles automatic scaling and deployments, freeing you to focus on solving engineering challenges.
- WeWeb: Our frontend development platform. It uses a visual development interface to allow us to create production-ready Vue.js single-page applications. This tool lets you configure HTML, CSS, and JavaScript visually, while also providing the option to integrate custom Vue.js components, add bespoke JavaScript or NPM packages, and extend functionality with additional CSS when the standard tools aren’t enough. Similar to platforms like Netlify or Vercel, it automates hosting and deployment, allowing you to focus on building scalable, high-quality interfaces and managing client-side state effectively.
- Collaboration Tools: Figma, Whimsical, Notion, Twist/Slack, and Google Meet. We also provide TypingMind accounts for enhanced productivity with AI models like OpenAI, Anthropic, and more.
You don't need to be an expert in these tools when you start, but we do expect you to understand how they work and be ready to dive in. We've found that developers with traditional coding backgrounds typically become proficient within a few weeks and reach expert level within a few months of full-time work.
